neri & hu inserts delicate brass frame into sulwhasoo flagship in seoul

over the past few years, south korea has seen a rise in international popularity for their cosmetics and meticulous skincare industry. many companies have used distinctive retail interiors and branding to visually attract customers and recognition into the array of stores especially in seoul. recently, korean beauty brand ‘sulwhasoo’ charged designer-duo neri & hu to realize their flagship branch located in the capital city’s gangnam district.

set on a corner site and rising at five-storeys, the store not only showcases their diverse selection of skincare products but hosts two spas. the retail space is defined by a continuous and slender grid construction of brass filaments influenced by the lantern; by celebrating the heritage of sulwhasoo, the design brought to life connections to asian culture and traditions.

the concept originates from forming a journey that appeals to all the senses. in creating a series of voids and openings in the building, visitors fully experience the structure as it moves through the space and envelops the different programs. mirror volumes are inserted into a wooden landscape to reflect and amplify the seemingly endless structure. meanwhile, the products have been carefully distributed as precious objects, with fabolous light fixtures from Viabizzuno integrated to gently illuminate them.

the change in material and color is apparent. the basement spa is wrapped with dark brick walls, earthy grey stone treatment rooms and warm crafted wood floors producing a sense of intimacy and shelter. as visitors move up the program, the material palette becomes lighter and complemented with furniture by stellar works and carl hansen. lastly, the space opens up to a generous rooftop terrace decorated in outdoor furniture by gandia blasco and overlooking views of the surrounding urban context.

The Pierced Light is an exploration in glass-blowing and organic glass forms. The table light features a hand-blown glass body and a steel rod with an internal LED lamp. The molten glass is rolled and inflated, and then pierced on an angle as it solidifies. Once hardened, the glass body is sand-blasted for use as a diffuser to spread a soft light. The glass extends from the round body in the direction it was pierced, giving a nod to the fabrication process. Each glass body is crafted with unique sculptural quality, and its distinct form is given contrast by the minimal design of the LED rod that fits through its pierced hole. Stripped of any ornamentation, the lamp is finished in copper, chrome, or gold, and is activated by a button at the end of the rod.

Floris Schoonderbeek designed a clever light for Weltevree that loves to be taken out to different destinations. Guidelight offers multiple functions as it’s a flashlight, a work light, and an ambient light all rolled into one convenient, portable package. The sphere on top includes an LED light that rotates easily from a spotlight to mood lighting. It can be carried, hung up, or placed on a table, depending on where you need it. There’s a dimming function and it comes with a battery that charges via USB. When the lamp is fully charged you get 10 hours on high or up to 150 hours at the lowest intensity.

Aurore produces coloured luminous effects that change depending on how far away from the wall it is. When switched off, its disk becomes opaque and transforms its surface into a mirror creating reflections in changing colors.

Franck Bohbot’s cinematic photos of New York form a sentimental study of storefronts

for the series ‘light on – the color of the night’, bohbot forms a sentimental study of storefronts through a series of expressive and cinematic architectural ‘portraits’. shot over the course of two years, the collection highlights these commercial spaces nearly devoid of the human activity that usually populates them, turning the storefront into a stage for both nostalgia and modernity.
